A West Tisbury man was ordered held on $25,000 cash bail last month on a possession of child pornography charge.
Andrew Carroll, 30, pleaded not guilty to the charge in Edgartown District Court on Sept. 17 and is awaiting a pretrial hearing on Nov. 12.
State police began investigating Mr. Carroll in June after receiving a tip that Mr. Carroll had shared child sexual abuse material in a Snapchat chat, according to a report from the department.
After subpoenaing phone and internet records, police sought a search warrant at the West Tisbury home where Mr. Carroll was living and executed it on Sept. 16, police wrote.
After arriving, officers with the cybercrime unit interviewed Mr. Carroll. He confirmed that the Snapchat account the officers had received a tip about was his, but told them that he was talking to a woman whom he believed was 20 years old, according to the report.
Police said that Mr. Carroll told them that he had received pictures of children, but recognized them as child sexual assault material and blocked the person on Snapchat. Despite that, police wrote that he had saved the files in a hidden folder.
Police later looked in his phone and found a video of a man raping a prepubescent girl, according to the report.
West Tisbury police arrested Mr. Carroll and at his arraignment Judge Benjamin Barnes ordered he have no unsupervised contact with anyone under 17.
