Mary Ashley has resumed her affiliation with Sandpiper Realty Inc. after a professional and educational hiatus.

Ms. Ashley began her real estate career at Sandpiper in 1999, leaving the Island in 2003 to pursue a master’s degree in counseling psychology at Lesley University while continuing as a successful broker with Coldwell Banker in Cambridge and at Saint Armand’s Circle in Sarasota, Fla.

VNA Begins Capital Campaign for Office

The Vineyard Nursing Association announced this week that it has launched a capital campaign to raise money to buy the building that houses its office off State Road in Vineyard Haven. The purchase price for the facility, located at 15 Merchant’s Court, is just over $2 million.

“By anyone’s measure, we are entering a new and exciting era in health care,” wrote VNA executive director Bob Tonti in a letter that accompanies the nursing association’s annual report for 2010.

Three Men Charged In Violent Debt Collection Dispute

Three Island men were arrested and charged with assault and battery after they reportedly attacked a man with wooden stick last week while trying to collect a debt.

Safe Ponds as Towns Grow: Island Case Studies at VCS

Ponds in Peril, a forum to follow last summer’s successful event sponsored by the Vineyard Conservation Society, will be held on Wednesday, July 21 starting at 7 p.m. at the Sailing Camp in Oak Bluffs. The featured speaker will be Michael D. Giggey, a principal at Wright-Pierce Engineering. Mike will address water quality and wastewater management and infrastructure issues associated with growth and development on the Vineyard, presenting case studies of Sengekontacket Pond, Lagoon Pond and Lake Tashmoo.

Sailing is a summer sport, at least for the most part. It is also usually limited to people of means who belong to expensive private sailing clubs.

But Sail Martha’s Vineyard is breaking all the usual rules. Founders Brock and Hope Callen think Islanders and seasonal residents alike should be able to enjoy the sport year-round, without worrying about breaking the bank.

Quick Intersection Change Predicted

After a well-attended and positive meeting with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation road safety audit team on Tuesday, West Tisbury selectmen are now confident state officials will agree to some sort of immediate fix for the intersection of State and Old County Roads, thought to be one of the most dangerous crossroads on the Island.

About 25 people attended a meeting with the road audit team, which included a visit to the problem intersection. The purpose of the meeting was to survey the intersection, observe the traffic flow and recommend changes.

Oak Bluffs Officials Try to Quiet Outcry Over Noise Complaints

In what has become a summer refrain in Oak Bluffs, residents of the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association appeared before selectmen on Tuesday to complain about loud noise and music coming from two popular downtown establishments on Circuit avenue: Deon’s Restaurant and the Island House.

Peter, Claudia, and Mila (seven months) Hunsaker from Berlin, Germany are visiting Lee and Jamie for five weeks this summer. Claudia is on a fourteen month maternity leave from her job with the state of Brandenburg. Peter teaches sixth grade at the Berlin Cosmopolitan School, a private, international school from kindergarten through twelfth grade.

Bill Gruetzmacher to Join Bank of Martha’s Vineyard

William (Bill) Gruetzmacher, a Vineyard homeowner and a Vineyard summer resident since 1983, has just joined the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard, a division of Sovereign Bank, as vice president and business banking relationship manager. He will be responsible for coverage of businesses on Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod and will have offices in both Vineyard Haven and Hyannis.
