Though I would never admit to being a cheerleader, I somehow find myself surrounded by pom-poms. 

These pom-poms won’t cheer for the team (although they may cheer you), and they come in many colors besides Vineyardpurple. Look for pink, white or blue pom-pom-like poufs all around town: after all, summer in Edgartown means hydrangeas.

Three plays in development will debut with pay-what-you-can performances this weekend at the Vineyard Arts Project in Edgartown. Each play runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday, in a rotating schedule so viewers can see three different plays in one day, or one each day, or any other combination.

Road Work

A 100-foot section of North Road in Chilmark will be under construction beginning at 8 a.m. tomorrow, leaving only one lane open to traffic.

The roadwork is expected to take about three hours to complete, and motorists should expect some delays. The section in need of repair is located across from Carroll Lane.

Gone are the grownup gatekeepers of movie merit — kids are the audience for the weekly Cinema Circus films. So the Gazette and the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival bring you the big view from the smaller viewers with weekly kid critics.

Bargain With the Devil

Harvard University professor Robert Mnookin will discuss his new book, Bargaining with the Devil, in a 7:30 p.m. program on Thursday, July 1, at the Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven.

A five-year-old girl, wildly happy to be on South Beach with her mom and dad on a sparkling summer afternoon, chases her shadow down the strand. Suddenly her screams shatter the tranquility. She crumbles to the sand, terrified at sudden, intense pain. Her parents rush to her aid, wide-eyed and shocked. Penetrating the sole of one tiny foot is a large jagged shard of green glass. In trauma and disbelief, they tear to the hospital, intent only on immediate help for their desperately crying child. Would she ever run carefree down a beach again?

SMF versus QBA

On Saturday; book lovers from all over the Island gathered at the West Tisbury Public Library to celebrate librarian Paula Black on what would have been her 57th birthday.

It’s been a long time coming for Morning Glory Farm to expand its farm stand. The farm has been overwhelmed in recent summers by the demand for the local produce they sell. This summer that problem may be averted. The new building has been open since Memorial Day weekend, and a formal grand opening was held on Saturday in the post and beam structure that looks like a miniature version of the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury.

On the same weekend the U.S. national team was eliminated from the World Cup by losing to Ghana, a Vineyard soccer team was playing in a big tournament of their own, and very much like the U.S., facing the same team that knocked them out of contention in the last go-around.

The Vineyard Under-13 team (U-13s) traveled to Lancaster to play Ludlow Friday morning in the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions (MTOC).
