Watersheds
Against a backdrop of national headlines over the massive and spreading oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that appears to have no end, regional headlines over the city main break that left two million residents in the greater Boston area having to boil their drinking water, it was a weekend where water quality was very much in the news.
Scorched Earth
From the wide, grassy sweep of Katama Plains to the rolling wooded hills of the north shore, the charred smell of smoke hung in the air throughout March and April this year in many of the Island’s outlying places.

Jessica Forend of Oak Bluffs has competed in the Intercollegiate Dressage National competition for the past last three years as part of Johnson & Wales Intercollegiate Dressage Team — and she is the first rider to ever win her division each year.
Ms. Forend was champion in the first level division in the individual contest that took place as part of the national competition on April 24 and 25.
It’s an NCAA Division I team that has won has five championships in eight years — that’s better than Ohio State University’s Rose Bowl record. This team has one of the finest training facilities in the country, with expansive practice fields, personal trainers and individual tutors. Reigning national title holders, the team recruits only eight elite student athletes a year.
A spokesman for the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital confirmed yesterday that Dr. Timothy Tsai is no longer director of the hospital emergency room, although the hospital could not provide further details about the circumstances that led to his abrupt departure this week.
“Dr. Tsai is on leave from his position as director of emergency medical services,” said hospital spokesman Rachel Vanderhoop. “That is the only statement we are making right now,” she added.
Tisbury selectmen are expected to finalize regulations for the sale of beer and wine, and also to set a date for a special town meeting when they meet next Tuesday.
If all goes according to plan, town restaurant owners will be able to apply from next Wednesday to have their establishments licensed. And voters will meet, probably on June 29, to reconsider a proposal to pay $225,000 in extra wages to the Tisbury police.
