Isn’t there a line we can queue in to get our money back for this last cold week of April? Yeah, now I’m supposed to quote T.S. Eliot about April being the “cruelest month” as if we need to be reminded. Obviously Eliot grew up on a similar latitude to ours.

Springtime weather is supposed to return this weekend after a few days of temperatures in the 40s and 50s, windy and drizzly. We are due to have temperatures in the 70s over the weekend. The fiddleheads have poked their heads above ground and the shad are in full bloom.

A story in Friday’s Gazette about the Edgartown selectmen’s action on an application from a summer tour operator contained errors. Ron Minkin’s application is for a 14-passenger van, and it was the third meeting Mr. Minkin had with the selectmen.

The Gazette regrets the errors.

Tisbury Beer, Wine Sales Win Strong Voter Backing

After long controversy and indecision, Tisbury voters on Tuesday approved the sale of beer and wine in the town’s restaurants.

Tisbury selectmen now will be empowered to issue as many as 19 year-round licenses and an unlimited number of seasonal licenses for the sale of beer and wine.

Proponents of beer and wine sales have been pushing the measure for five years. When all the votes were tallied on Tueday night, they had won by a clear margin: 881-747.

Chilmark is enduring a spring northeaster as I write, and the clouds have obscured the full moon ... and the wind still blows!

The community center was the meeting place for the annual town meeting that took place on Monday last. Approximately 200 voters turned out and resolved the year’s budget and bylaw problems. The election of town officials took place on Wednesday as I wrote this, so look for results on the front page.

Moon

The gibbous moon spends the weekend and the nights ahead mostly in the morning sky. Tonight the moon rises three hours after sunset and dominates the southern night sky all the way to dawn. The moon resides in the zodiacal constellation Sagittarius this weekend.

The cherry trees are in full bloom, the apple trees are about to burst in their beautiful colors, and Mother Nature decided to turn the temperature down and turn on the fan. But it is promising to be a great weekend, and the temperature is supposed to be in the 70s so let’s hope for the best.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Alexandra Habekost, Caroline Hurley and Ana Ribeiro, who all celebrated their day on April 25.

Please Adopt Us

The cat population at the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard remains the same as last week. We have Dixie, the beautiful orange, white and black calico; Binx, the black and white sweet cat with the long white whiskers; and Phoebe, the orange and white cat who loves her basket to curl up in. Frankly we can’t understand why these three cats have not been adopted — they are real beauties. And then there are Cyrus and Miss Misty, who are fast becoming the shelter mascots. They are allowed to come out of their cages and greet people who come to visit.
