Garden Center Grows Artistic Community With Weekly Show

On Friday evenings during August, Vineyard Gardens in West Tisbury is transformed into a community art gallery. Works of art are arranged among the plants and paintings are hung from benches turned on end.

“The idea came from wanting to support the local artists and knowing that our flowers would complement their work and their artwork would complement our flower plant displays,” said Christine Wiley, who owns Vineyard Gardens with her husband, Chuck Wiley.

Fashion Sense on the Canvas, Artist Portrays Life in Color

Glenn Tunstull treats an art exhibition like a fashion show.

Whereas fabrics and patterns decorate a model, swatches and brush strokes dress his canvas.

“Each painting represents where I am today,” Mr. Tunstull said.

Kids' Art Show Benefits Less Fortunate

Dinosaurs and sharks mingled nicely with live ducks and a baby goat at Saturday’s Sense of Wonder creations art show in Vineyard Haven. The dinosaur and shark were a couple of papier mache creations completed by young campers who attend the after-school program at Sense of Wonder. The ducks seemed right at home in a tub of water in the backyard. Music, face painting and a bean bag toss shared the space.

Family Planning Art Show

Memorial Day Weekend brings more than the signal of summer. It is also the weekend of the annual Friends of Family Planning Art Show Benefit which helps support the Family Planning Clinic of Martha’s Vineyard.

Island artists donate from 40 to 100 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of their work to benefit the cause. Appetizers and desserts are donated by Island restaurants, caterers and chefs.

The opening gala benefit is from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. Music will be provided by Jeremy Berlin.

Finding Peace Within Her Art, One Solid Brush Stroke at a Time

Two robins perch together on a dogwood branch, chests nearly touching. They appear to be conversing — one’s beak is cocked open, while the other looks on, comprehending, engaged. Situated slightly off center of the painting, the birds are framed by an abundance of delicate pink dogwood flowers, some just budding, others in full bloom.

Potters Bowl

Art Show for Beauty and the Belly

When eating out, diners typically only have to choose the food that goes on their plate, not the plate itself.

Not so at the Potters’ Bowl, the annual Featherstone fundraising event held last Sunday evening. Now in its third summer, the Bowl is based on a simple concept: buy a unique, locally crafted bowl (or two), and get free soup. All proceeds in turn go to support Featherstone’s clay studio.

“People were lined up at a quarter to four,” committee chair Debbie Hale said. “We’re bringing out every bowl.”
