Bread Sale
Vineyard Committee on Hunger’s annual Bread and Bake Sale will be held Saturday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., as ever under the Linden Tree next to the Capawock Theatre on Main street, Vineyard Haven. Both bread and baked goods will be available for purchase.
The Vineyard Committee on Hunger has chosen to donated the money from this year’s bread sale directly to Huruma (Mercy), the home for children depicted in Len and Georgia Morris’ film Rescuing Emmanuel.
If there was one word to describe the weather the Vineyard has been experiencing now for weeks, it is Seattle — that northwest city that has a reputation for its gray, rainy weather.
It’s been like that on the Vineyard this spring. Skies are often gray and there is unscheduled rain, making it hard to plan the day.
The weather improved a bit mid-week with some sun, although temperatures remained quite cool. But according to the National Weather Service New England is caught in a cycle that just won’t quit.
A new Italian fine dining restaurant is opening Wednesday, June 24, at The Charlotte Inn on Summer street in Edgartown. Owner and chef A.J. Black promises to infuse flavorful Italian herbs and spices, quality truffle oils and Barolo wines into homemade pasta and entrées of fresh seafood, whole fishes, aged beef, veal and lamb, free-range poultry and risottos.
His passion is to prepare uniquely rustic and classically refined dishes like filetto al pepe verde, duck fantasia, the chef said in a statement, with fresh lobster and fish specials prepared daily.

A handwritten sign sat next to the cash register at Craig’s Bicycles: “Health Care Organizing Kickoff . . . Attend a local meeting here!” And so on June 9, a wet Tuesday evening in Vineyard Haven, a small but spirited group of nine people gathered around the spare parts and 12-speeds to debate of the future of health care in America.
Barkentine Tours
The 130-foot three-masted barkentine Peacemaker is tied up in Vineyard Haven through the weekend. Daily free public tours are available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, tomorrow and Sunday. The vessel is on its way to participating in the Tall Ship parade in Boston in July. Last week she was in Hyannis. She leaves on Monday and heads to Provincetown, then on to Plymouth and finally Boston. She hails from Brunswick, Ga., and is owned by Twelve Tribes, a religious organization.
Please Adopt Us
The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has one cat available for adoption this week. Owl is a lovely white seven-plus-year-old spayed Persian. She’s very gentle and a bit shy, needs a soft lap and someone to cuddle with. Please come to the shelter to see her, Wednesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The shelter needs volunteers! Call 508-627-8662.
Island favorites Justen Ahren and John Maloney last night kicked off a summer festival of poetry at Featherstone Center for the Arts, presented in association with the West Tisbury Poet Laureate and the Martha’s Vineyard Writers’ Residency.
Billy Collins, Naomi Shihab Nye, Fanny Howe, Honor Moore and others are part of the festival program.
The next event is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, with Fan Ogilvie and Fanny Howe.
There is plenty of evidence already on the waterfront: Vineyard sailors are getting ready for summer.
The Vineyard Haven Yacht Club has a new headquarters. The Edgartown Yacht Club has acquired property for a junior sailing center on Chappaquiddick. The Holmes Hole Sailing Association, the only sailing organization on the Island without a building, has a full roster of 25 events planned throughout the season.
