Edgartown fell short of a quorum by about 30 voters last night, missing the chance to pay its share of the Martha’s Vineyard Commission budget with available money from 2009.
The town had planned to pay using money from available funds for 2009. Doing so would have avoided putting the town over the levy limit for the coming year.
Now the town is faced with financial uncertainty and has yet to secure voter permission to make the mandatory annual payment to the commission.

Thank you to Mark Alan Lovewell for his superb writing regarding our Manning family home which was torn down on June 8. There will be two new modular homes arriving on July 8. One home will be for Paul, Theresa and Noah James Manning, and the other home will be my down-sized retirement abode. We are all grateful to keep the property in the Manning family and for the next generations to enjoy. In the meantime, I will look forward to frequent visits from my sisters Judith and Jyl.

Someone told me that Tuesday night it was 36 degrees in Chilmark and the weathermen had to look as far away as Alaska to find another 36-degree location. Wednesday was warm and sunny, just the way June is supposed to be, so maybe that cold night was a bad dream. However, the rainy days are real and still with us.

Last weekend the weather was decent in that it wasn’t cold and the sun did shine. The Father’s Day weather forecast is for a reasonably good day, but Dad will relax no matter the weather. He will not have to clean up after dinner even if it is a backyard cookout. The summer season officially begins on Sunday; the buses will be operating on the full summer schedule beginning next Saturday.

We have enjoyed two days of sun. Now we will have to wait for another break as the forecast does not look good for the next week. But make the best of it with all the events going on. Just check today’s Gazette calendar page.

The sun is out. This may not seem to be a major event but given the number of recent days with gray skis and rain it seems like a big deal. A plus for all the rain is my garden looks better than ever. The peonies are spectacular and along with the columbines, roses, and wild daisies everything looks wonderful. The long grass and wild flowers in the open fields are magic when rippled by the breeze. It has been a great week for gardens.
Tomorrow morning offers a pretty sight close to the eastern horizon. The crescent moon appears in the light of dawn, to the east of the planets Venus and Mars. Venus and Mars appear as a close pair, only two degrees apart. Venus is the brighter of the two planets. Mars is a dull red.
