Hospital Celebrates Cancer Center's 10th Anniversary

The Martha’s Vineyard Hospital welcomed staff and patients past and present Thursday to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Cancer Center — the clinic that made on-Island cancer care possible.

Stone Bank Changes Largely Approved By MVC

The developer of the old stone bank property in Vineyard Haven secured approvals this week for several changes he made without prior permission from the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, but not before receiving a dressing down from the regional board.

Several members of the commission chastised Reid “Sam” Dunn at their meeting Thursday for making alterations to the development at the former downtown bank site. The development is planned to include condominiums, commercial units and a restaurant.

Overnight Winter Shelter to Return to Community Services

The Harbor Homes winter homeless shelter will reopen Nov. 1 on the campus of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, where the shelter has operated for the past two winters.

Supernova

There is a new supernova in the night sky, too dim to see even with most astronomical telescopes. The nova was spotted back in May and it continues to gain the interest of astronomers. The nova is in Ursa Major, a constellation overhead, more familiarly known as the Big Dipper. The nova is in an area of the constellation, just above the Big Dipper's handle. Astronomers named it Supernova 2023ixf and it was discovered by a Japanese amateur astronomer Koichi Itagaki on May 19.

A Mark Twain Story Gets a Contemporary Spin

This weekend, Allison Snyder’s play The Campaign that Failed: A Theatrical Reimagining of Mark Twain’s Short Story premieres at the Tisbury Amphitheater. Performances are June 23 and 24, beginning at 6 p.m.
