Commissioners Agree to Meet Again With Their Runner-Up Candidate for
County Manager Position

At a special meeting held Tuesday night, the Dukes County
commissioners voted to invite E. Winn Davis, who with Laurie Perry had
been selected as a finalist for county manager, back to the Island to
discuss the position.

The commissioners last week voted to rescind Ms. Perry's job
offer and to ask the selection committee to reconvene to find three
qualified candidates.

Understanding the relationships between the ocean and air is
essential if weather forecasting in the future is to be more precise.
Most living on Martha's Vineyard know the ocean keeps the Island
cooler when the mainland is suffering in the dog days of July, and
warmer in the winter when the temperature inland is bitter cold. But

An incomplete plan to build 320 homes in the southern woodlands
section of Oak Bluffs was submitted to the Martha's Vineyard
Commission last week amid a fresh stream of invective from the former
developer of the Down Island Golf Club - who is now threatening to
sue the commission on a variety of new fronts.

A purchase announced by the Martha's Vineyard Land Bank Friday
will conserve roughly 100 acres of dense woods and active farmland in
West Tisbury. The land, sold by Katharine Sterling, is a significant
anchor in the land bank's cross-West Tisbury trail, located
directly between the Wompesket Preserve and Old Holmes Hole Road.

Police Audit Says Another $19,000 in Fees Was Lost from
School's Accounts

Oak Bluffs police now believe that the regional high school culinary
arts teacher charged with stealing $11,000 worth of school-owned
equipment and food supplies may have also pocketed an additional $19,000
in payments that were supposed to go into a student activity account.

Police went to Edgartown District Court yesterday seeking two new
charges against Peter J. Koines: one count of larceny over $250 and a
second count of larceny by false pretenses.

Hillary Clinton's Book Signing Draws a Good-Humored Crowd

At 7:30 Saturday morning, the line of people waiting for tickets for
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's book signing had become so unwieldy
that the police department asked the Bunch of Grapes, which had been
scheduled to open at nine, to let people in early.

Rotting beams caused the collapse of a deck which injured several
people at an evening party in Chilmark last Thursday night.
