Tisbury selectmen, faced with an unexpected near doubling in fees
from their wastewater engineers, this week bluntly threatened to drop
the Earth Tech firm and seek another.

Board Blocks Big House Plan

The Edgartown planning board this week blocked construction of a
massive residence on Chappaquiddick, a 10,000-square-foot home slotted
for an exposed bluff overlooking Wasque. Tuesday night's vote on a
special permit - three in favor and two against - fell one
shy of the needed four-vote majority.

Fast ferries have been much in the news these days, especially on
the Vineyard, but here is a fresh question to ponder: What happens when
a ferry that plies what is arguably the shortest route in the world
suddenly becomes faster?

Of course the answer is simple enough - the ferry gets there
faster. On the Chappaquiddick ferry this means a route that now takes
about two minutes has now been shortened by about 30 seconds.

directive from the board of governors, senior managers at the Steamship
Authority are now moving ahead to develop New Bedford as an expanded
port.

Search for Missing Plane Is Called Off; Pilot and Passenger Presumed Dead

The land search for a plane carrying two people that is believed to
have crashed near or on Martha's Vineyard Tuesday night was
suspended yesterday afternoon at 3 p.m., pending new information.

For two long days and a night, local firemen, police and volunteers
combed the woods of the Island in search of the remains of a
single-engine airplane that went missing in foul weather. As the Gazette
went to press, there was still no trace of the plane.

Minutes shy of 11 o'clock last night, the Martha's
Vineyard Commission narrowly approved the Fairwinds affordable housing
development slotted for 4.9 acres of sloping land west of
Tisbury's center.

Final approval of the Chapter 40B project - with six members
in favor, four against and one abstention - was in question for
most of two hours of deliberation.
