Unsung Hero’s Praises Sung at State House Reception

Loretta May of Vineyard Haven has been named an “Unsung Hero” by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women for her efforts to better the lives of those in the community.

A VTA employee since arriving on the Island 12 years ago, Ms. May drives a regular morning route between the tree Island towns. On Tuesdays, she drive a Medivan to Boston. The journey keeps her and medical patients off-Island from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In the Darkness, a Night Light Shines

When my wife Cathlin and I were married the ceremony was part tradition and part theatre. The wedding was held at Judson Church in New York city. Cathlin wore a red dress for the occasion and we walked down the aisle together, entering the church already as a couple.

About halfway through the service, a very tall man stood up in the back row and began waving his arms and yelling, “Wait. Wait. What about the objections part? What about giving our reasons why this couple can’t get married?”

West Tisbury Sidewalk Ends Era of Town’s Rural Character

Not long ago West Tisbury was described, using a line from the Oliver Goldsmith poem, as “the fairest village of the plain.” But with the addition of brick sidewalks in front of the town hall and between the First Congregational Church and Alley’s General Store, citification has come. There’s still a general store, of course, and a Farmers’ Market twice a week in summer and the Agricultural Fair in August, but now suddenly the town has surrendered its fairest village status in favor of modernity. And it’s too bad.

Senior Project Sends School Skyward

Oliver Filley has spent the last few months of his high school career focused on designing and making kite boards, a course of study that blends his passion with education and his future plans.

Oliver is one of 12 Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School seniors to complete senior projects this year, in which students devote three class blocks during a semester to a project that aligns with their interests. This year, senior projects ranged from art and music to nutrition and agriculture.

Lea and Ted Rosbeck of Edgartown announce the birth of a son, Edward Van Rosbeck Jr., born on May 12, 2012 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Edward weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces at birth. He joins big sister Alana.

Island Baseball, Lacrosse Teams Advance

Baseball and boys’ lacrosse advanced to the postseason this week, joining both tennis teams and girls’ lacrosse in the state tournament. Softball remains in the hunt for a tournament spot with two games yet to play.

The team secured its first postseason berth in 10 years with a 9-1 win over Nantucket on Saturday. After a win over Chatham on Wednesday, they moved to an 11-7 (4-4 in the EAC) season record with one remaining game still scheduled for today.
