I was on the other island last weekend, and got an excellent view of both Nantucket and the Vineyard from the air on the way home. As we came in over the Vineyard, the morning sun sparkled off all the ponds along the south shore. I usually just think of the Edgartown and Tisbury Great Ponds, but the south coast is filled with small ponds in between them. I like Nantucket a lot, but seeing the Vineyard that morning, I felt lucky to live on what is surely the prettier Island.

It has been another week of warm weather with lots of sunshine in Chilmark. I’ll be happy to open with that sentence every week, but it is late fall and I will probably soon have to change my tune!
Word has reached us of the death recently of Nancy Flanders Buell. We send condolences to her family and friends. She has lived in Florida for many years but grew up in Chilmark. Her many family members and childhood friends will miss her visits to Chilmark.

I think if we didn’t know it was November, with the weather the way it is you would think it was spring. I have had people tell me hey have lilies with buds on them in their gardens, and if you look around town the geraniums are still in full bloom and flourishing.
On Sunday morning I got a call from Mike Dolby, Pam Dolby’s husband, to inform me that the pinkletinks were out at Sweetened Water Farm. So I guess that means that spring is really here.
The Vineyard Gazette office will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. The newspaper will publish on Friday as usual and the office will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day. Correspondents are reminded that early deadlines apply this week.
