Thank you to Kerry Alley for his wonderful presentation at the Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living cultural luncheon on March 12. Kerry gave a very impressive overview of the Portuguese community on Martha’s Vineyard — why they came here, how they survived, their language and education, their accomplishments in the Vineyard community and their many contributions. Many of us left the luncheon on Saturday knowing so much more about the Portuguese.

Mother Nature showed us who was boss on Monday as she sent snow showers our way. I don’t think there was one person who did not say, “Snow, are you kidding me?” Now the temperatures are going to be in the 60’s this weekend. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

Chilmark joins the rest of the world in grieving for the many lost and injured in the terrible events in Japan this week. It is hard to truly comprehend the damage. It seems far away and yet, with the amazing pictures, it seems to be next door. As always when we suffer these events of nature, I wonder what the Chilmark connection will be.

Ever longed for free therapy, especially in the middle of the night? You can always leg it into town and stop before the closed-but-not-shuttered windows of Sanctuary on Circuit avenue, owned by Frank and Rita Imbimbo. As most of you already know, the window is aglow at night with thousand-points-of-light glass flowers, icons of all the grand religions and, most predominantly, signs to lighten our psychological and spiritual load.

Tomorrow night’s full moon has the name Mud Moon. The Old Farmer’s Almanac calls it the Worm Moon, but on the Vineyard, we don’t see worms for weeks to come. We’ve got mud.
