I am not what is generally considered a Y person. However, my recent gluttony over the holidays, spurred by an errant early New Year’s resolution, necessitated some kind of serious intervention. The Y seemed a likely option.
Sharks Name Coach
Ted Currle has been named head coach of the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League for the 2011 season. Previously, Mr. Currle spent eight seasons as an assistant coach in circuits in Virginia and Maryland. He is currently the head baseball and football coach at Norton High School in Norton, Mass.
Tonight at 5:30 p.m. the Shabbat Service at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center will pay homage to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his friend and colleague Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. This is the 13th year that the Martha’s Vineyard Chapter of the NAACP and the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center will cosponsor this tribute. Rabbi Caryn Broitman will lead the service.
Honoring a Man and His Dream
As the nation grieves over those lives lost in an assassination attempt on Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, we will honor on Monday the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., whose dreams were left unrealized when a gunman’s bullet felled him in the prime of his life.
He would have been eighty-two years old.
It was in a motel room in Maine in the 70s that it all came together for the young Jon Lipsky.

Many of us share a certain horror of travel off-Island. Obviously, the less you go, the greater the horror. Here are my recent misadventures: This past Monday, my stated mission was to travel from Oak Bluffs to Andover, north of Boston, to attend the funeral of my Uncle Fred.
