Tonight at 5:30 p.m. the Shabbat Service at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center will pay homage to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his friend and colleague Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. This is the 13th year that the Martha’s Vineyard Chapter of the NAACP and the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center will cosponsor this tribute. Rabbi Caryn Broitman will lead the service.

Richard Michelson, a poet and children’s book author, will speak about his book As Good As Anybody: Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Joshua Heschel’s Amazing March Toward Freedom. This book won the 2009 Sydney Taylor Award gold medal from the Association of Jewish Librarians. The book was also a finalist for the Massachusetts Book Award, the National Jewish Book award as well as the American Library Association’s 10 Best Religious Books of 2009.

Those who participated in the Civil Rights Movement in any way will also have the opportunity to share their experiences. The service will include a number of freedom songs from the civil rights movement and from Jewish tradition.

An Oneg Shabbat light dinner will follow the service and tribute.

All are welcome to attend.
