Announcing Victor
Paul W. Schultz, husband of the late Margaret Carroll Schultz, announces the arrival of a grandson, Victor Lacy Weston Bird. He was born to Paul’s daughter and son-in-law, Alexandra and Ryan Bird of Renton, Wash., on April 24 at Overlake Hospital in Belleuve, Wash. He weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce. Alexandra is a 1993 graduate of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Her husband is stationed with the Coast Guard in Seattle, Wash.
Tourism Meeting Slated
The state legislature’s joint committee on tourism, arts and cultural development will meet on Monday, June 9, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown.
Rep. Eric Turkington of Falmouth, co-chairman of the committee, said the Island is an especially appropriate place to meet, “since tourism, arts and culture are the key economic forces that drive the Vineyard economy.”

Chilmark is enjoying these few days of summer which aren’t as rushed as the days will be after schools are closed throughout the land. We have a few days to get all the chores done, grass mowed and gardens planted before the crowds come to visit. We will be ready — unless we sneak off to chase those bass that already are lurking in our waters.
Many of our seasonal friends and neighbors are finding their way to Chilmark in spite of the many complexities of travel these days.

Improving County Government
In the end, after a laborious and sometimes painful process, the Dukes County Charter Study Commission has recommended relatively little change in county government.
The commission’s conclusions match the gut feeling that many Island residents held at the start of the study: that the failings of the existing county government have owed far more to the members of that government than to its structure.
Commencement Day 2008
This morning the Vineyard Gazette salutes the graduating seniors at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and at the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School. High school commencement ceremonies begin at one o’clock on Sunday at the historic Tabernacle in the Camp Ground in Oak Bluffs; the charter school graduation is tomorrow afternoon at one thirty at the school campus in West Tisbury.
Sweet Inspiration
The fragrances of spring are everywhere in the air, luring even the most sedentary out of doors. Dooryard lilacs — deep purple, lavender and white — are just gone by and fragrant wisteria is brightening many Vineyard gardens.
Even though I partied so much in college that I graduated magna cum lager, I went to class often enough that I still have a dream that is common among people who subconsciously recall the old alma mater. It starts with a beautiful co-ed in a filmy negligee — oops, sorry, wrong dream!
