The YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard will revive the original broadcast of Orson Welles’s War of the Worlds with its Theatre of the Mind event on Saturday, Oct. 26 beginning at 5 p.m.

An Evening Without (Art*Island) with performance readings will be presented in collaboration with the Massachusetts ACLU and the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven.

The change of light in the fall is my cue to put up my feeders. I can remember the first of many feeders I have had over the years. It was a big pine cone stuffed with a mix of bacon fat, peanut butter and oatmeal.

Brrr! Mighty chilly Monday morning! I’ve been lulled into complacency with the previous six weeks of beautiful weather. I suppose it is time to take stock of overall readiness for the next season.

I can’t say it enough: we need rain. I will probably eat my words at some point but I was doing some planting Sunday and the soil was just like powder. But on a good note, Tuesday’s weather was the weather that makes us love New England — cool, sunny and calm winds.

Anne Heywood has lost her knitting. And no, “knitting” is not a euphemism for “mind”. She was searching for it in all the likely corners of town and Chappy, but had yet to uncover it when she met me on the ferry. So if anyone finds knitting of any sort, please contact Anne.

Chilmark is working its way through a mild and pretty October. There is a lot going on and everything seems to be under control. The town is having the North Road repaired in places. This last week the Tabor House stretch was paved and now the D.H.’s Hill will be done beginning this Friday and continuing Monday if weather permits.
