Jewish Heritage

Two rabbinical students arrive on Island today as part of the Chabad-Lubavitch Summer Peace Corps, as the summer project of this Hasidic movement in Orthodox Judaism is generally known.

Hauling suitcases of videos, brochures, books, Shabbat candles, mezuzahs (a religious scroll placed on doorways) and kosher food, Yishai Eliefja and Yitzchok Kravitsky will be teaching classes and visiting Jewish residents door to door, reaching out to help Jews rediscover their heritage.

Letters to the Editor

WIND TOWERS

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

I just don’t feel comfortable that any planning agency on this Island has the comprehension or rules in place to handle the potential for the proliferation of hundreds of steel towers that may be constructed on this Island in the coming years.

Certifiably Good

Lisa Fisher is protective of the word organic. She guards it like one of her precious artichokes, pays close attention to the term as she tends her string beans, and cares for it like the tomatoes that are just beginning to ripen.

There are nearly 90 certified organic farms across Massachusetts. Ms. Fisher’s Stannard Farms in West Tisbury is the only one on the Vineyard.

Power Cruisers

Hit me! No, not with your classic cruiser, your hot rod or your muscle machine. All of these cars were part of the Aquinnah Power Cruise, and those shown above were stopped at Al’s Package Store to get a card that might give them four-of-a-kind, a full house or royal flush in the poker run. There were four more stops before the big gathering at the Cliffs.
