Vineyard Haven Town Column: June 12

It’s another Blooming day! That’s right, the annual Bloomsday event honoring the writings of James Joyce will be held at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Wednesday, June 17, beginning at 8 p.m. John Crelan has kept this wonderful event going with his nonprofit, tax deductible Arts & Society group. This will be the 37th event. It comes with music, Joycean tales and famous writings, and showcases some of your talented friends and neighbors in a most theatrical setting.

Oak Bluffs Town Column: June 12

In the April 17, 2015 issue of the Vineyard Gazette, Oak Bluffs conservation agent Elizabeth Durkee wrote an excellent op-ed on the Inkwell and Pay Beach, acknowledging the special place it holds in our history, culture and hearts and also providing a comprehensive explanation of the causes of the erosion over the years. She also described the work taking place today to ameliorate, well, Mother Nature’s actions.

Chilmark Town Column: June 12

Chilmark is enjoying sunshine and warmth and the clear signs of a busy season on the way! If you are not here yet you have not missed any beach days because we have not been really warm until now. Beach stickers are on sale now at town hall every day beginning at 9 a.m.

Selectmen Grant Entertainment License to New Bowling Alley

The Oak Bluffs selectmen this week approved an entertainment license for The Barn Bowl and Bistro, and granted an exception to a policy of prohibiting construction in the business district after June 1.

In Search of Black Racers, Slithering Along With Island Snakes

Carefully lifting up a panel of plywood near Oyster Pond in Edgartown on Monday, Liz Baldwin uncovered a rare sight: a black racer, the Island’s largest and least common snake species. It was her first encounter with the species, which has been in decline here since the 1970s.

Hospital Named to Top 20 for Critical Access Facilities

For the second year in a row, the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital has been named one of the top 20 critical access hospitals in the country.

The rhododendron and lilacs appear to have relished the extra cold and snow of the winter. This is the blossomiest spring in my memory. Mytoi garden is particularly dazzling. The little bit of rain we had last week unfortunately didn’t really end the drought. However, I was sorry to see that it did encourage my lawn to grow.

Aquinnah Town Column: June 12

The temperatures have dipped to the 50s most of the week but there is an abundance of rhododendrons in full blood across the Vineyard. A few drops of scattered rain to water the gardens. Only a few squid are in Menemsha Bight at this time.

Airport Prevails in Long-Running Legal Skirmish With County

A superior court judge Monday handed a victory to the Martha’s Vineyard Airport Commission, ending a costly protracted legal battle with the Dukes County Commission over control of the Island’s only commercial airport.
