It’s another Blooming day! That’s right, the annual Bloomsday event honoring the writings of James Joyce will be held at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Wednesday, June 17, beginning at 8 p.m. John Crelan has kept this wonderful event going with his nonprofit, tax deductible Arts & Society group. This will be the 37th event. It comes with music, Joycean tales and famous writings, and showcases some of your talented friends and neighbors in a most theatrical setting. The cast includes Phil Dietterich, Molly Conole, Dorian Lopez, Gerald and Anna Yukevich and Martha Hudson. Tickets may be purchased at Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in advance or at the door; $20 gets you in to a literary event you won’t forget. If you have any questions, contact John at jcrelan@yahoo.com. I’ll see you there.

You can take notes on better eating habits at 7 p.m. at our Vineyard Haven Public Library on Tuesday, June 16, in the program room. This free event features Ali Berlow who is committed to raising awareness about the food we feed our families. Ready, set, get healthy!

Arnie Reisman’s original dark comedy, Not Constantinople, is running at the Vineyard Playhouse on the Patricia Neal Stage through June 20. Bring your friends and seasonal guests to hear the words of our famous writer and poet. Speaking of the Vineyard Playhouse, there will be a Fish Tales fundraiser for the Playhouse on Monday, June 15. Arrive at 6:30 p.m. and you can order chowder, salad, and rolls until 7 p.m. Then the salty stories begin. Your performers are Nelson Sigelman, Charlie Blair, Janet Messineo-Israel and Buddy Vanderhoop. There will be a silent auction and door prizes. The auction is for a fishing trip with Captain Jennifer Clarke. Who could ask for anything more?

There is still time, until June 23, to purchase a ticket for the farewell and thank you party for our superintendent of schools, Dr. James Weiss. The party will be held at the Grange Hall on July 25, but no tickets will be available at the door. Reserve your spot by buying a ticket available at any of our school offices or at the superintendent’s building. Not only has Dr. Weiss devoted 10 years to our school system, we are also celebrating his 40-plus years as a caring educator. This promises to be one of the parties of the season!

Confidential to Lyn K: I had so many interruptions in my reading because of the busyness of the start of the season that I do not have much to report. However, I have just started Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy and am looking forward to living in another place, another time, for a few nights.
