I worked in the pouring rain last Saturday. Couldn’t have been happier. I transplanted all the baby collards, kales, spigarellos and lettuces into the hoop house. Hopefully, there will be salad makings for most of the winter.

West Tisbury Town Column: Oct. 17

The sunset, regrettably, is now taking place just after 6 p.m. and is dropping faster each day. When daylight saving time ends on Nov. 2, we will plunge into darkness before 5 p.m. and the fall season we will be upon us! Old Jack Frost paid us a brief visit Monday morning to scout the area. He vows he will return shortly so everyone can see and feel his calling card.

Oak Bluffs Town Column: Oct. 17

The lawsuit of Lillian E. Judkins vs. Thomas J. Charette and others was heard from Dec. 3, 1925 to Feb. 26, 1926. The plaintiff (Judkins) brought the lawsuit on March 25, 1925 because Charette (the new owner) had refused to honor the provisions of Judkins’s lease. Executed in 1920, the lease of the Oak Bluffs’ Eagle Theatre (today, the Island Theatre) would have expired in January 1925 — except that Judkins had given notice in September 1924 as required of her intention to renew for an additional five-year term.

Chilmark is backing into fall with beautiful summer days and still many visitors and fishermen. The retail and food businesses are closing as I write. Betsy and her crew will be at the Larsen’s Fish Market until close of day, Oct. 19, and that will do it for all but Stanley Larsen’s Menemsha Fish Market.

Chilmark Reapplies for State Grant to Restore Squibnocket Beach

Chilmark has reapplied for a major state grant to restore Squibnocket Beach after learning recently that the original award was in jeopardy. The selectmen have also approved $20,000 to fund cost estimates for alternative plans for the beach.

After 29 years Sgt. Johnson Shifts to the Beat of Retirement

Next summer, Kenneth Johnson and his wife Mary can watch the Fourth of July fireworks together for the first time. Mr. Johnson, 56, has retired after 29 years as a sergeant with the Edgartown Police Department.
