Alena Grady and John Grady of Edgartown announce the birth of a son, Wyatt Alexander Grady, born on Feb. 22 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Wyatt weighed 7 pounds, 0.6 ounces at birth.

Heidi Vought and Asa Vought of Vineyard Haven announce the birth of a son, Colby David Vought, born on Feb. 19 at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital. Colby weighed 8 pounds, 6.7 ounces at birth.

Rosemary Confalone and Tony Confalone of West Tisbury announce the birth of a son, William Elsworth Buckheart Confalone, born on Feb. 21 at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital. William weighed 8 pounds at birth.

Spring is upon us. There are many signs, some of which seem to conflict with the thermometer reading. Just within the last few days the ferry captain on the afternoon shift has been able to get home before darkness sets in. I have seen the new 2014 seed catalogs at friends’ houses. The full moon in mid March is known as the Worm Moon, in contrast to the recent Snow Moon of this month. Though the fields at Slipaway Farm are covered in snow, the hen house is a real crowd scene with at least four dozen hens all talking at once. The farm needs egg cartons as you can imagine.

Spring Is a Month Away

The sky is falling, steadily. Total snowfall since the first of January is 33.6 inches; which means we are already ahead of the annual average of 24.7 inches, according to the numbers compiled by the National Weather Service station in Edgartown.

Last year, 2013, the total snowfall was 36 inches.
