New winter times are in place until June 2014 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven. Friday night Shabbat services begin at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday morning Torah services get underway at 10 a.m., both services are led by Rabbi Caryn Broitman.
An Oneg Shabbat on Fridays or Kiddush on Saturdays will follow the services.

The Martha’s Vineyard Bible Church will not hold its regular morning service this Sunday, Oct. 27. Instead, there will be a potluck supper with worship and testimony sharing at 5 p.m. that afternoon. The church meets at the American Legion Hall at 35 William street in Vineyard Haven. The congregation will return to its regular 10 a.m. Sunday service on Nov. 3.

Prayers of Peace
All are welcome to attend an interfaith nondenominational Prayers of Peace service in the chapel of the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital in Oak Bluffs at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. Sponsored by Island clergy, musicians, artists and the interfaith community, Prayers for Peace will feature readings, prayers, reflections and music by a variety of people representing a range of faiths and disciplines.

Margot Schwarz Weston is the recipient of this year’s Spirit of the Vineyard Award. Mrs. Weston, 99, first came to the Vineyard at the age of eight. She currently serves at the nonprofit small business organization SCORE, as a volunteer at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum and with ACE MV. Mrs. Weston has a 1,000-hour pin from the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. All this adds up to a lifetime of service to the community, and in celebration she will be presented with the award at a ceremony on Saturday, Nov.
The sixth annual Domestic Violence Awareness Walk is on Saturday, Oct. 26 with registration beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Edgartown Park and Ride.
With Rez Williams’s paintings hanging on the walls of the Grange Hall Monday, artist Ruth Kirchmeier recalled one of his art exhibits at the former Nye Gallery. His signature boat paintings were placed on dark walls and lit from above, she said. “One felt surrounded by looming giants of every color and description, with skies that were more vivid than and unlike any sky a mere mortal might experience. Fighting with the sky for attention was the equally mesmerizing water. It was glorious.”
