The honors continue for the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks, who earned their first league title in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League last month. Early last week, the team was named Organization of the Year by the league for their dedication to and improvement of the fan experience. In the past year, the Sharks installed new stadium seats and lights at the Vineyard Baseball Park, and nearly tripled average attendance. League commissioner Chris Hall commended the organization for its efforts and success.

The stage is a dinner table. As audience members enter the theatre they are encouraged to sit in the first few rows and be guests at the table. Then, as the performers guide the audience through five stories, the table transforms into a highway, a parking lot and even an ocean.

The show is called Who’s Hungry and it was performed at the Yard last Friday and Saturday night. It is a collage of puppetry, movement, audio recording, visual arts and live discussion all coming together to reveal the isolation and hopelessness of not having enough to eat.

The Old Parsonage house in West Tisbury, believed to be the second oldest home on the Island, has new owners.

The 17th century farmhouse owned by Tara Whiting and her brother Daniel Whiting sold to Eric Burns and Bonnie Lafave of New York city for $600,000. The deal was completed on Friday, Justin Manning of JJ Manning Auctioneers confirmed.

The house was scheduled to go to public auction on Sept. 28, but Mr. Burns and Ms. Lafave’s pre-bid offer was accepted beforehand.

Reached by telephone on Monday, Mr. Whiting called the sale bittersweet.

The fishermen — and fish — were out in Edgardown’s inner harbor Sunday. But there were no striped bass or bonito on the hooks. Instead, they were casting for menhaden.

The small, oily, inedible fish are prized bait, especially for striped bass. This time of year, when derby fishermen are vying for the largest striped bass, a premium is placed on menhaden.

A large portion of Flat Point Farm in West Tisbury has been permanently placed in conservation thanks to a purchase by the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank completed last week.

I married my husband more than 60 years ago for better or for worse — but not for fishing. There have been better years and worse years, but not many fishing years for me.

At the derby weigh station, curious onlookers are often just as large a group as the fishermen themselves. Friends and family stop by as catches are brought in, and tourists wander down to the docks to watch the happenings. Sometimes, four-legged friends make appearances.

On Wednesday morning, filet volunteer and committee member David Hearn brought along his four-year-old black Labrador, a handsome (and hungry) pup with the perfect derby name: Scup.

On Saturday afternoon, under bright blue skies, Norma Mendoza posed for a picture next to the Edgartown Lighthouse. At her feet lay a gray stone inscribed with the names Rosaura and Rafael Freire Mendoza surrounded by flowers and small white Precious Moments figurines.

The skies opened up just as Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby chairman John Custer finished announcing the winners of the derby’s annual Kids Day on Sunday morning. Rolling gray clouds overhead had brought trickles of rain earlier in the morning, but the downpour held off until after the awards were complete. 

Football and soccer shined brightly for the Vineyard over the weekend. On the gridiron the Vineyarders picked up their first win of the season Friday night, defeating Randolph 18-6 in an away contest. On Saturday afternoon, both girls’ and boys’ soccer earned 1-0 wins over visiting Whitinsville Christian School. Field hockey fell to visiting Needham 2-0 on Saturday.

Football’s win Friday night was “mainly due to the special teams,” head coach Donald Herman said. “They were the heroes.”
