Marney and Richard Toole of Oak Bluffs are delighted to announce the engagement of their son Taylor Toole to Jennifer Hirsch, daughter of Molly Paul of Concord and Kevan Hirsch of Ambler, Pa. Jen, a graduate of Harvard University, is an account manager at SHIFT Communications, a public relations agency in Boston. Taylor, a graduate of Emerson College, is a video producer for Boston University. A May 2014 wedding is planned.

Island Theatre Workshop Follows the Yellow Brick Road With Ageless Cast

“Munchkins!” he calls to the group of children sitting the front row of the theatre. The kids talk and giggle and tick-tock their feet.

“Does everyone have a hat tonight?” Mr. Ryan asks. “We’re going to start in a minute.”

Elizabeth Blackwell Institute Receives Grand Opening

A new multi-million dollar health institute to aid the elderly, the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute, was opened last month in Bristol, England. It is named for America’s first female doctor, the forebear of Barbara Day of West Tisbury and Samuel B. Jones of Carlisle and Chilmark. Both, along with their spouses and Samuel Jones’s son, Steve, were in attendance at the celebration, as well as the three daughters — Scilla (sic), Margo and Jane, of the late George Blackwell of Chilmark. Dr. Blackwell was the great-great aunt of Mrs. Day and Sam and George Blackwell.

State Road Restaurant Fined for Violations

The West Tisbury selectmen had stern words for the owners of State Road Restaurant this week over special permit violations and a failed health inspection in connection with an unlicensed prep kitchen.

A basement space that was allowed to be used for refrigeration and storage of beer and wine and dry goods had been turned into a prep kitchen with plumbing. The kitchen was flagged by health inspectors during a routine inspection on August 13. Restaurant owners Jackson and Mary Kenworth will be fined $1,600 by the town building department for violating their special permit.

Tisbury Man Jailed For Heroin Distribution

A Vineyard Haven man was sentenced to at least three years in state prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to drug charges in Dukes County superior court.

Jeffrey T. Moore, 44, pleaded guilty to possessing to distribute a class A substance (heroin) and possessing to distribute a class B substance before Hon. Gary A. Nickerson, associate justice of the superior court. He was sentenced to three to three and a half years at Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Cedar Junction, a maximum security prison in Walpole. The sentence will start Sept. 4.

Tuesdays at Twilight

Tuesdays at Twilight winds down with a concert featuring Sally and Ben Taylor and friends at the Grange Hall on State Road in West Tisbury on Tuesday, August 27. The concert marks the end of the series, which benefits the West Tisbury Library Foundation. The foundation is raising funds for the capital campaign for the West Tisbury Library.

Training Courses Offered

The YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard is hosting an American Red Cross lifeguard instructor training course from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 26 to 28. Participants must currently be certified as a lifeguard and be at least 17 years old. Cost for the course is $500 and includes instructor manuals and training.

College Courses

The Cape Cod Community College expands its course offerings on the Island this fall by adding a medical terminology course in the college’s efforts to expand the Allied Health career pathway. The course will be taught Wednesday evenings in the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital medical staff library by Dr. Lena Prisco, director of the hospital’s medical laboratory.

State Sen. Dan Wolf Announces Resignation, Suspension of Gubernatorial Campaign

State Sen. Dan Wolf announced Thursday that he has suspended his campaign for governor and will resign his state Senate seat next week in the wake of a state ethics commission ruling about his ownership of Cape Air.
