Art Show at Dockside Inn

Valentine Estabrook brings her solo show to the Dockside Inn on Saturday, July 20, from 4 to 7 p.m.. Her works include plein-air pastel and oil paintings of the Island landscape.

The Dockside Inn is located at 9 Circuit avenue extension in Oak Bluffs. Ms. Estabrook will provide a demonstration along with information about online and on-Island workshops.

Book Sale Donations

It’s almost your last chance donate to the annual book sale sponsored by the Friends of the West Tisbury Library. They are still collecting donations for sale in the gym of the West Tisbury School on Old County Road. What they are looking for: used books in good condition. What they are not looking for: encyclopedias, magazines, outdated or obsolete books or those old moldy and mildewy books that have been lying around your basement for years.

Back in Swing of Things, NRBQ Headlines Flatbread

From rockabilly to pop, rock and blues to jazz-rock, New Rhythm and Blues Quartet, NRBQ, can just about play it all. Founded by pianist Terry Adams in 1967, the band is known for its diverse sound and high-energy live performances. Recently Mr. Adams revamped the band’s lineup and has been as busy as ever, churning out two albums — one live, one from the studio — in the past two years. Another studio album is in the works. NRBQ returns to Martha’s Vineyard to play at Flatbread this Sunday, July 21, after a long time away from the Island.

Spreading the Ladino Love on-Island

Ladino music is a multicultural experience. A unique blend of Spanish and Hebrew lyrics, Mediterranean instrumentation and Arabic rhythms, it originated in the Jewish communities of medieval Spain in the years preceding their expulsion. When Ferdinand and Isabella expelled the Spanish Jews in 1492, the musical tradition continued to grow and change under various new cultural influences.

Undersea Cable Failed, Vineyard Running on Generator Power

Just in time for a heat wave, Martha’s Vineyard is relying partially on backup generators for electricity after an electric cable failed last week.

NStar spokesperson Michael Durand said Tuesday that electricity to the Island is being provided via two underwater cables and up to 15 temporary generators on Island.

Cinema Circus Short Films Get Green Light from Kid Critic

Each week the folks at Cinema Circus show a series of short films on Wednesday evening at the Chilmark Community center. The films begin at 6 p.m. but the circus — complete with jugglers, face painters, stilt walkers, food and music — gets underway at 5 p.m.
