Mrs. Louisa Gould and Mr. James Beecher Lamont of Edgartown announce the birth of a son, James Maxwell Gould-Lamont, on June 8 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. James Maxwell weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces and was 19 inches long.

Martha's Vineyard Streetball Classic Returns

The 11th annual Vineyard Streetball Classic, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, is Wednesday, July 3 at Niantic Park in Oak Bluffs. Opening rounds begin at 10 a.m. Participants can register at the Niantic courts tonight from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and at same-day registration beginning at 8 a.m. tomorrow in the tent next to the courts. The tournament highlights students ages 9 to 18 years old. Each team of three to five players battles through a series of double-elimination rounds with the top teams in each division receiving trophies at the end of the day. Tribe Appeals Recent Casino Ruling

The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) has appealed a decision that blocks its right to intervene in a federal lawsuit concerning the state’s casino law.

In the original lawsuit, private developer K.G. Urban Enterprises argues that a provision in the 2011 gaming act is unconstitutional.

Slow, Steady Progress on Schifter House Move

A large house on Chappaquiddick inched slowly toward its destination this week across a deep, sandy trench at Wasque point, as early summer fog blew in and out and the ocean continued to eat away at a rapidly eroding bluff nearby.

Work progressed to relocate the 8,300-square-foot home owned by Richard and Jennifer Schifter.

Head-On Collision Snarls Traffic, Temporarily Closes Beach Road

Oak Bluffs police Lt. Timothy Williamson said a Chevy sedan crossed the center line and hit a taxi van head-on in front of the restaurant Hooked. The crash occurred around 1 p.m. The taxi was not carrying passengers.

Lt. Williamson said police are investigating whether the driver of the sedan “may have been impaired.”

Falmouth Academy Eighth Grade Graduation Party

The parents and students of the Vineyard contingent of eighth graders attending Falmouth Academy held a graduation party for themselves at the Chilmark Community Center on Friday night, June 7. As perhaps the largest class ever of students commuting to the mainland for two school years, they gained a reputation among fellow commuters for their pleasant demeanor, high spirits and generally good behavior.

Riptide Warning for South Shore Has Expired

South-facing beaches along Martha’s Vineyard are under high risk for rip currents today, the National Weather Service has announced. The warning will remain in effect through Monday evening.

In response to the warning, The Trustees of Reservations has closed the beach at Long Point Wildlife Refuge. Swimmers are encouraged to use the pond for swimming.
