Kevin Burchill, a recent Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School graduate and recipient of a $1,000 Comcast scholarship for community service, leadership skills and academic achievement, attended a Comcast Leaders and Achievers ceremony at the State House in Boston on June 18.

Boil Water Order Lifted; Lagoon Well Shut Down

The boil water order for Oak Bluffs was lifted Wednesday morning, and officials said they had shut down the offending Lagoon Pond well and started adding chlorine to another well closest to the town's water tank.

Tisbury School Announces Fourth Quarter Honor Roll

The Tisbury School has announced its honor roll for the fourth quarter of the 2012-2013 academic year.

Douthitt-Hawk Wed in Aquinnah

Laura Anne Douthitt and Bradley Alan Hawk were married June 8 at the Aquinnah home of her cousins Ted and Sarah Howes. Captain Steven C. Doane (Ret’d) of the U.S. Public Health Service, the bride’s uncle, performed the double-ring ceremony.

Caitlyn O’Donnell and Gregory Leland of Vineyard Haven announce the birth of a son, Deacon Bruce Leland, born on June 20 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Deacon weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces at birth.

Ashley and Ethan Richard Felix of Revere, Mass., announce the birth of a son, Beau Hyde Felix, born on June 23 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Beau weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces at birth.

Cristina and North Whitney of Vineyard Haven announce the birth of a daughter, Averie Joy Whitney, born on June 21 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Averie weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces at birth.

Boil Water Order Extended in Oak Bluffs

A boil water order in Oak Bluffs was extended late Tuesday evening after test results from town water samples came back from the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Two out of five water samples tested positive for fecal indicator bacteria, interim water superintendent Paul Provost said. The DEP is slated to send a representative to the Island Wednesday morning to meet with town and water district officials. The main source of the problem is the Lagoon Pond well.

Voters Back Markey in Special Senate Election

Vineyard voters followed the rest of the state in electing Cong. Edward J. Markey to the U.S. Senate in a special election Tuesday.

Mr. Markey, a Democrat from Malden who has spent 37 years in the House of Representatives, was elected to the senate with 55 per cent of the vote, the Boston Globe reported. His opponent was Gabriel E. Gomez of Cohasset, a businessman and former Navy SEAL.

Voter turnout on the Island averaged 32.5 per cent, higher than the statewide average of 27 per cent.
