Walking to End Cancer at Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society held its Relay for Life benefit walk yesterday and last night at the MVRHS track. There were games, cotton candy, food and tents where walkers could rest and share their stories. All day and all night families and friends from every part of the community walked to raise money for the fight against cancer. They were also paying tribute, step by step in solidarity, to all those who have fought, or all still fighting, this disease.  

Windemere Auction Helps Residents Stay Connected to Island

The Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center hosted its seventh annual fundraiser auction Friday night at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. The proceeds of the evening will benefit Windemere’s recreation department, which provides residents with opportunities to take part in activities around the Island, including yoga classes, concerts and dinners.

Girls' Tennis Sweeps in First Postseason Match

Girls' tennis won its first match of the postseason tournament Friday afternoon with  5-0 sweep of visiting Westport. The Vineyarders are seeded eighth in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association South Section Division 3  tournament. Westport is seeded ninth.

Vineyard Haven Waterfront Still Rebuilding After Sandy

The effects of Hurricane Sandy are still being felt on the Vineyard Haven harborfront, but marina owners say they are recovering on schedule for the influx of summer boats in coming months.

The October 2012 hurricane destroyed a portion of the town-owned Owen Park dock and severely damaged the dock of the private Vineyard Haven Marina, washing away its replica pilot house.

Study Aims to Address Needs of Changing Demographics

The data is clear: like the rest of the country, Martha’s Vineyard is bracing for a sharp increase in the population of older residents. The number of Vineyard residents 60 and older is growing at a faster rate then the rest of the state, and that demographic is expected to grow as the baby boomer generation gets older. Some estimates show that Island residents between 60 and 70 years of age will triple by 2020.
