Edgartown Man Arraigned on Largency, Forgery Charges

An Edgartown man was arraigned last week in Edgartown district court after allegedly stealing more than $50,000 from his employer.

Patrick A. Joyce, 27, was arraigned March 29 on larceny of more than $250 by a single scheme and, in 24 separate cases, 24 counts of forgery of a check and 24 counts of uttering a false check.

$2.65 Million Needed to Repair High School Roof

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School committee voted Monday in favor of a $2.65 million roof replacement project.

Vineyard schools business administrator Amy Tierney told the school committee that last spring a roofing consultant came to look at the building and estimated repairs would cost $1.9 million.

Petition Calls for Drastic Cuts to Striped Bass Fishing Limits

As many as 800 Massachusetts anglers have signed a petition seeking additional steps to conserve striped bass from overfishing. The petition calls for a 50 per cent reduction of both commercial and recreational efforts. As many as 30 Vineyarders signed the petition online according to Brad Burns, president of Stripers Forever, a Maine-based organization.

Elevated Fire Risk Today

The combination of dry air and gusty winds will enhance the risk for fires across the state, including on the Vineyard, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency has announced.

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement warning of the increased threat.

“Local Fire Weather officials have advised that fine fuels, grasses and leaf litter, will be very receptive for ignition. In fact any fire across unshaded fine fuels can rapidly spread in these gusty conditions,” the statement said.

Seeds of Change at Reinvented, Relocated Whippoorwill Farm

Andrew Woodruff kicked at the dirt at Whippoorwill Farm on a recent afternoon. The soil felt familiar, but he stomped on it a few times to make sure it was good and grounded, twisting himself into place.

“Today is a beautiful day and spring is around the corner,” Mr. Woodruff, 50, said squinting into the sun. “It’s definitely a fresh start to a new beginning for Whippoorwill Farm.”

Land Bank Signs Deal to Conserve Whippoorwill Farmland

The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank announced Tuesday that it has signed an agreement to buy an agricultural preservation restriction to permanently conserve some four and a half acres of farmland at Whippoorwill farm off Old County Road in West Tisbury.

The owner of the farm is Andrew Woodruff. The price to be paid for the restriction is $43,000 per acre.
