Daffodils are blooming, the red-wing blackbirds are back, people are wearing shorts and flip-flops, and there are record-breaking temperatures all over. I think it is spring, but it feels like summer. Well, whatever it is we won’t complain.

Spring has arrived in Aquinnah — the osprey are at their Lobsterville nest, the pinkletinks are in full chorus across town, the daffodils are in bloom, squirrels are in abundance, as are the rabbits. The fog has lifted and the sun is shining with temperatures in the 60s this week.

Chilmark is a busy place. Farmers, fishermen and gardeners are doing lots of outdoor chores in this unseasonable warm and sunny weather. I suspect by the noisy bird noises I hear every morning that they are feeling the pressure of the warm weather and are needing nests! Thick fog greeted us up-Islanders on Wednesday morning and returned in the evening. The sound of a nearby foghorn waked me this a.m. and it is still only March!

Well, the first full day of spring was Wednesday. Old man winter left us a “calling card” Sunday morning with a white frost. The snowfall total for the fall and winter was less than 10 inches and the snow did not linger for any great amount of time. There were only a few days when it was just plain miserable out. This will go down in the records as one of the warmest winters ever. The last day of winter we had a temperature of 72 degrees!

I can’t say I’m proud or ashamed to admit this, but I do not understand the computer. Now, I can Google in a pinch and wait impatiently behind someone showing me some supposed quick function while they make excuses for its slowness or an unsolicited advertisement popping up instead. In any event, last week’s column had a paragraph about my Dad mixing paint and using motor oil to condition the wood shingles on our house. The computer added “he” right before “used” which completely changed the idea I meant to say. I mentioned to Marie that my editor must have changed my sentence. She came to his defense and said the computer often “thinks” you meant to say something differently. Silly me, I only knew about spell check. The event made me think about quotes in the paper and how a single word, or letter even, can alter a person’s intention.
