The Island’s largest wind turbine to date was installed Monday morning on the rolling hills of the Allen Farm in Chilmark. Once complete, the turbine will be 149 feet tall.
The turbine will produce 125,000 kilowatt hours per year, double the amount of energy the pastoral sheep farm uses, and is expected to be in full operation within the month.
“I hate the wind,” farm owner Mitchell Posin said of the salt spray that usually covers the land he and wife Clarissa Allen own. “Now we get to use it for something good.”

The varsity football team defeated the Nantucket Whalers 10-7 Saturday afternoon, ensuring that the Island Cup’s visit to Nantucket would be nothing more than a day trip. A large crowd gathered on Saturday night at the Steamship Authority to greet the returning victors, who hoisted the trophy above their heads.

Farm Institute Board
Chuck Hughes has joined the board of the directors at the Farm Institute, the Katama teaching farm recently announced. Mr. Hughes moved to the Island in 2001 and serves on many nonprofit boards, including the YMCA, Sail MV and the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School.
The Vineyarders took home their third win in four weeks last Friday night against visiting Medford, rolling over their opponents 21-0 in last week’s homecoming game and the final home match of the season.
As part of the town’s application for a Green Community designation, Tisbury selectmen signed off Tuesday on a policy to purchase only fuel-efficient vehicles in the future. Emergency vehicles are exempt from the policy.
Selectmen also approved a post-closure use permit application for the town landfill. The application will go to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and, if approved, will allow the town to install photovoltaic panels at the landfill site.
