A group of mostly Venezuelan migrants who were flown to Martha's Vineyard with false promises were receiving assistance at Joint Base Cape Cod Monday after their short but welcoming stay on the Island came to an end.

Vineyard Wind plans to make the Island its operations and maintenance hub for the offshore wind development project. It hosted a recent jobs fair at the regional high school.

Just as medical professionals on the Vineyard are feeling encouraged by the start of a Lyme vaccine trial, Island doctors are reporting numerous instances of itchy, painful rashes caused by lone star tick larvae in so-called “tick bombs.”

State and Island officials, faith-based groups, nonprofit agencies and volunteers rallied quickly to accommodate 50 mostly Venezuelan migrants who arrived unexpectedly at Martha’s Vineyard Airport Wednesday, part of a coordinated political campaign to divert migrants from border states.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum hosts the 21st annual Children’s Memorial Ceremony of Remembrance on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. the Edgartown Lighthouse.

Each year, as part of the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby, a special morning returns to the Oak Bluffs Steamship pier. Before the first ferry slides in, kids ages four to 14 are given free reign of the wharf to try their luck during Kids Derby Day.

No registration is needed, just an ability to wake up early — and convince a parent to do the driving.

As expected, four kittens were snapped up in no time last week.
