Sundews prove that the adage, “You are what you eat,” doesn’t always apply.

These plants do the unexpected: They eat animals. No vegetarianism here, and photosynthesis only goes so far with them. Sundews are carnivorous plants and will devour insects for sustenance and survival.

The weather for July has been fantastic and the weekend weather was great except for the surprise thunder and lightning storm early Saturday afternoon. We had at least four days with a temperature over 90 degrees, high humidity for a good part of the month and a lot of sun. Last year was the third warmest July on record and this one is right up there. Rain was mostly in the evening or night — all in all it was Chamber of Commerce weather.

Tall, statuesque with steady ground strokes and terrific angles, Margaret Berzins is the most improved women’s player at the East Chop Tennis Club. Despite these impressive credentials, she was unable to defeat the Granny who has somehow, miraculously, made all of her gray hair disappear. I guess it helps to look the age of your opponents. In any event, Lyn Herrick defeated Margaret in the women’s singles finals 6-4, 6-3.

Gazette Chronicle: Saving Grace

Saving Grace

From Gazette editions of July, 1956:

I didn’t know that I would ever want to see salt water again,” mused Dr. Robert Boggs of West Chop as he and his family prepared for the beach. Dr. and Mrs Boggs, their daughter Barbara, 16, and son Robert, 12, are all survivors of the sinking of the Andrea Doria off Nantucket last week, and they reckon themselves as being highly favored by whatever gods may be, that they are together, well, uninjured and able to tell of their frightening experience.
