Nantucket Drops In But Briefly For A Vineyard View: Impressions of Strength, Minus the Beauty – her Narrow Passages
The new ferryboat Nantucket, hailing (God save the mark!) from New Bedford, stopped briefly at Vineyard Haven on Tuesday – about an hour and a half – to give the people who are paying half the bill an opportunity to see the new boat. Some of them did, but the view was hardly satisfactory, the time being limited and the boat swarming with children taking advantage of the spring vacation from school.

Treadway Inns to Take Harbor View Management
An agreement has been signed by the Harbor View Hotel Corporation of Edgartown and the Treadway Inns Corporation under the terms of which the latter will take over the management of the former. The contract, which is renewable, is for five years.
The name of Treadway Inns needs little by way of introduction since it enjoys an excellent reputation in its field, owning or managing some sixteen well known hotels in New England, New York and Florida, besides managing restaurant facilities in a number of private clubs.

Marine Hospital Sale Verified
Verification of the sale of the Marine Hospital, Vineyard Haven, to the Boston Seaman’s Friend Society, as reported by the Gazette last week, was made early this week by the General Services Administration in Washington, D. C. The price was $18,000.

Sale of the Marine Hospital Is Reported
It is credibly reported that the U. S. Marine Hospital property in Vineyard Haven has been sold to the Boston Seaman’s Friend Society, the sale having been consummated within the past week. Attempts to reach the Boston office of the society yesterday to confirm the transaction were unavailing. It has been known for some time that the society was interested in the property, and that committees have visited it several times, with a view to reporting on various details.

New Dwelling to Top Manter’s Hill, One of the Historic Properties of the Vineyard
Manter’s Hill, a Chilmark landmark since the beginning of the Manor, will be crowned with a year-round dwelling of imposing size at some time in the near future. The house is to be built for Lester Dana of Boston, who is in the process of purchasing fifty-five acres of the old Manter Place from Philip Siff, and the building will be done by the William G. Manter Co. of Vineyard Haven. William F. Swift, Vineyard Haven engineer and surveyor, will be in charge of the whole operation.

Curtain Falls On Derby, The Prize Winners Announced
The curtain fell on the eleventh annual fishing derby on Monday, an event that has brought the Vineyard much publicity and gained for the Island many new friends. This particular derby did not measure up to average in some particulars, although it surpassed all other derbies the Island has held in others.

Another Striped Bass Derby Is Coming Up
Coincident with the end of August the attention of those addicts of the pastime of rod and reel turned toward the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass Derby, which ought to be called merely a fishing derby because the blues have crowded the bass in number and popularity for the past several years.
The eleventh annual fishing derby of the Island will open on the 15th of this month and it might be well to glance back along the line of history of this event and to take what old timers would have called “a severe look” at what it constitutes as of today.

“Cottagers” Aid Drive for Hospital at Bluffs
The Cottagers Club ended its first active season, well pleased with its donations to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital auxiliary and the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital as its first charitable ventures.
The Cottagers Club came into tentative being last summer when a group of friends decided to direct some of their combined energies toward some unselfish enterprise beneficial to Island charities. This summer at the first official meeting the enthusiasm was contagious, and thirty-eight members now comprise the active list of the cottagers.

A New Day Dawns for the Bradley Memorial
The Bradley Memorial Baptist Church of Oak Bluffs is happy now to be in possession of a new church home where services have been held the past three Sundays. The structure which stands opposite the Oak Bluffs town hall on Pequot avenue, was built by the First Baptist Church and I used for many years until this congregation disbanded and sold the property to the Odd Fellows Fraternity.

Historic Emporium Where Hitching Posts Lined the Road
“Anything from a toothpick to a road wagon.”
This slogan was appended to the sign of a general store in a crossroads town in the mid-west. In fact, it was owned by a relative of the writer.
There isn’t much argument about the toothpicks. You can buy them in almost any store. But when it comes to a road wagon - farm wagon, that is - there is quite a bit of room for discussion. However, in a shed back of the store was a brand new Studebaker farm wagon.
