The attorney representing the owners of a stand of willow trees which is gradually obscuring one of the Island’s best scenic views at the Tashmoo Overlook has extended an olive branch to the town of Tisbury over the dispute.
In a letter sent to Tisbury town administrator John Bugbee on August 15, Michael Goldsmith, an attorney with Reynolds, Rappaport and Kaplan in Edgartown, offered a formula for further talks about the problem.
The Edgartown Yacht Club secured planning board permission last Tuesday to operate a junior sailing program for up to 50 students on a residential property next to the Chappaquiddick Beach Club.
The Edgartown town hall was closed Friday afternoon and through yesterday after carbon monoxide was detected in the building.
The town hall was promptly closed at 2 p.m. Friday after fire department chief Peter Shemeth discovered the noxious fumes. The building was ventilated over the weekend and remained closed yesterday to town employees, though no carbon monoxide showed up on tests Monday morning.
The leak of the poisonous, odorless gas was discovered on a fluke, town administrator Pamela Dolby said.

The Oak Bluffs zoning board of appeals on Thursday continued deliberations on the Bradley Square Memorial church project — a plan to create a mixed-use building at the corner of Masonic and Dukes County avenues with affordable housing, a cultural center and several artists’ work spaces.

Richard Doyle of the Federal Transit Administration recently presented the Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority with the FTA Region 1 Thinking Outside the Bus 2008 Milestone Achievement Award. The VTA reached the milestone of carrying over one million passengers (1,031,197) for the first time in its history during fiscal year 2008.
VTA passengers have kept it going into the new fiscal year, climbing aboard 261,735 times in July, a new record for the month. The Island’s busiest August week may be a good chance to try riding instead of driving.
