I have a friend in North Carolina who writes thank-you notes to people who make a difference in the local community. My friend inspires me. In the tradition of my friend, I want to thank some of the many volunteers, people who often go unnoticed, that do so much to make East Chop a better place to live.

The Chilmark roadsides have changed colors with the whites of the dogwoods and daisies giving way to the bright orange of the tiger lilies and the rambler roses in their many shades of red. I hope you all can take a minute from this busy time to notice the beautiful roses hanging over so many roadside stonewalls.

The Fourth of July is over, but it is nice to see that the Stars and Stripes is still up around town. The town was unscathed by the parade and the fireworks and it seemed everyone was happy. I think one of the highlights was the surprise guest and object of the parade, which was Ray Allen and the championship trophy of the Boston Celtics. I think that was one of the best-kept secrets.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week.

How heartbreaking to see the holes on Main street! Our sympathy goes to the owners of Moxie and the Bunch of Grapes. Although Café Moxie was under new management, both buildings and businesses have been long traditions. Certainly, the Bunch of Grapes is my favorite bookstore in the world. I remember Café Moxie when it was Popeye’s. Let us know what we can do to help.

Sunday was perhaps the better day of the long holiday weekend. Roger Blake of North Tisbury reports that business has been quite brisk at his pie gazebo where he daily sells homemade pies baked by his wife, Eileen and daughter Mary. On Saturday, he started out with 100 fresh baked pies and by 5 p.m., none were left to sell. Traffic, particularly downtown, is extremely difficult and congested these days. You have to remember to build another 20 minutes into your travel time.
