Alessandra De Souza and Joe Guarino of Oak Bluffs announce the birth of a daughter, Alyssa Maria Guarino, born on July 2 at the Martha’s Vineyard Community Hospital. Alyssa weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces at birth.

Cheryl Andrews-Maltais, her husband Dan and their daughter Samantha returned home on Monday after attending the annual Mashpee Pow Wow over the weekend. Cheryl was honored as a dignitary in her capacity as an elected tribal officer. Congratulations to their daughter Samantha Maltais who won first prize in traditional dance.

Dilly Walsh, who was recently diagnosed with ALS, and his family are hosting Vineyard Night for Compassionate Care ALS at the Walsh Family home at 320 Middle Road, Chilmark, on Thursday, July 17, from 5 to 9 p.m.

ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal, progressive, neuromuscular disease that causes its victims to lose control over hands, feet, arms, legs, neck, tongue, throat and, finally, diaphragm.

See Art in Action at Featherstone’s Open Studios

An interactive exhibit featuring five Island artists — Sandy Bernat, Eva Gallant, Jennifer McCurdy, Julia Mitchell and Heather Sussman — opens at Featherstone Center for the Arts on Sunday, July 13, with reception from 4 to 6 p.m.

All may come to observe how these five women create their art through lectures, exhibits, workshops, demonstrations and open studios featuring weaving, papermaking, clay sculpting, carving and throwing. The four-week exhibition includes a video by Richard Skidmore.

Tommy’s Tour of Vineyard Receives Second Printing

Thomas Dresser is pleased to announce the second printing of Tommy’s Tour of the Vineyard, his popular tour guide based on stories shared by tour bus drivers on their route around the Island. The material has been edited to make the book more readable and useful, but the essence remains the same: Mr. Dresser surveys the Vineyard from a variety of vantage points, including history, geography, social issues and humorous tales.

On July 11, Jim McLaurin, a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, will speak in the Friday Conversations program from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Oak Bluffs Senior Center. He will show a video about the group’s service in World War II. More information is available by calling 508-693-9771.
