The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank and Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation bought a majority of the historic Chappaquiddick property from the descendants of the Potter and Slater families for $13.78 million.
The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank goat herd will be sold off for $10 a head this week after the herd became plagued with parasitic worms.
The town is seeking to improve public access to Swimming Place Path, a nearly 350-year-old trail that connects Herring Creek Road and the Road to the Plains. The ancient way was first recorded in Edgartown records in 1675.
The Land Bank has seen an increase in deaths among the herd, partially due to the goats getting older and the fact that the worms are becoming resistant to dewormer.
The 13-acre James Pond Preserve includes a half-mile trail loop, pond access, ample vegetation and access to 650 feet of white sand beach flanking Lambert’s Cove.
I have participated in the Cross-Island Hike at least 15 times, but at 77 years old, at the end of each year’s hike I mutter: “This will be my last one.”
