Sam Fetters didn’t say his first word, he spelled it. At two years old, he was spelling before he was talking.

Sam Fetters spelled pinafore correctly Friday morning to win the Island-wide school spelling bee and a second trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. this May.

2015

How do you spell spelling champion? For two years in a row on the Vineyard, the answer has been S-P-E-N-C-E-R. Edgartown School seventh grader Spencer Pogue repeated as the Vineyard’s spelling bee champion at the Martha’s Vineyard All-Island Spelling Bee on Friday, correctly spelling the word “guitar” to take home the victory.

2014

Twelve-year-old Spencer Pogue won first place at the all-Island spelling bee on March 14. He will compete in May against the country's best spellers.

2001

A simple exchange of an "I" for an "O" cost the Vineyard's own Samantha Gillogly the title of National Spelling Bee Champion.
