The 11th annual Vineyard Streetball Classic, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, is Wednesday, July 3 at Niantic Park in Oak Bluffs. Opening rounds begin at 10 a.m. Participants can register at the Niantic courts tonight from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and at same-day registration beginning at 8 a.m. tomorrow in the tent next to the courts. The tournament highlights students ages 9 to 18 years old. Each team of three to five players battles through a series of double-elimination rounds with the top teams in each division receiving trophies at the end of the day. Vineyarders and visitors alike gathered at Niantic Park on Saturday to take part in the ninth annual Vineyard Streetball Classic. The double-elimination basketball tournament for preteens and teens featured, as is tradition, three-on-three half-court ball. As part of the classic’s ongoing evolution, new traditions, including a free throw contest, were also added to the day’s activities.

The music of the Star-Spangled Banner gave way to the sounds of emcee Allen (Deejay Lefty) Pires’s turntable as the eighth annual Vineyard Streetball Classic got underway this Saturday in Niantic Park in Oak Bluffs. For the next five hours, would-be NBA stars from 14 teams — six from the age 10 to 12 division and four each in the age 13 to 14 and 15 to 18 — battled through round robin and double elimination play before the two strongest sides met in each division’s final championship game.

A streetball rivalry was seething on the basketball courts of Oak Bluffs’ Niantic Park this past weekend. On Saturday, July 4, the Edgartown defending champions, the Cheezits, were preparing to take on the tough and much-hyped WBA, a four-man team from Boston and North Carolina.
