My friend Chris tapped on the flimsy clear plastic that separated the checkout counter from the entryway of Shirley’s True Value Hardware in Vineyard Haven.
“Is this bulletproof glass?” he joked with the woman behind the counter.
“Well . . . why don’t you stay on that side, I’ll get a gun and shoot at you, and we’ll find out.”
With that, the woman walked out from behind the register. She had gray hair, and wore thick, round glasses.

Falmouth Academy will host an admissions open house on Saturday, May 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. for families interested in learning more about the school. A van will pick up Vineyard families at 2 p.m. in Woods Hole to transport them to the school, and will return to Woods Hole in time for the 5 p.m. ferry.
More than 20 students from the Vineyard will attend the school next year.

Chilmark welcomed the rains of this week past. What was not ready before the rains are surely blooming now. The pink and white dogwood trees along the North Road and lilac bushes lucky enough to be in the sun are already in bloom. What will we do for Memorial Day flowers? The cherry and other fruit trees are already moving on and the shadbushes are everywhere in bloom. No dull rides up-Island these days.

John and Anna Alley are traveling in England for a couple of weeks seeking out and visiting with Anna’s English relatives. You may remember that they went to St. Michael island in the Azores a few years ago to seek out some of John’s ancestry, but no one would come forward and admit to being related to him. They had a fine trip anyway and brought back many fine photos. We wish them a safe return.
Women’s Workout
Curves of Vineyard Haven will give a free, 30-day membership to any non-member who visits the club during regular operating hours throughout National Women’s Health Week, May 13 to 19. This annual awareness week, coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health, begins each year on Mother’s Day.
Say goodbye to Venus this month. The brightest planet, which sits high in the western sky after sunset, has attracted plenty of attention so far this year. The brilliant planet was the subject of a story last month about an Air Canada airline pilot who altered his flight pattern, thinking he was too close to another airplane. What he took to be another airplane was in fact Venus.

To continue with Nancy and Cheyenne’s excellent adventure to New York: as soon as we reached the outskirts of White Plains she began her mantra, “When can we go to a mall? When can we go to a mall?” Rather like when we three kids would torture my father while he drove us in the car, “Can we stop for Carvel? Can we stop for Carvel?” I suggested it might be nice to say hello to Nonna first and drop the dogs and cat off so they could use the facilities.

Does any other town in the world feel as unreal as Oak Bluffs in early May?
You walk your dog past the pale pink bowers and towers of the Oak Bluffs Inn. You glimpse, beyond a Victorian pink-and-blue fence, a real live bunny nibbling grass under a splash of lavender wisteria and white tulips. Hello, Beatrix Potter!
