Every season of the year the Polly Hill Arboretum offers something of beauty and interest to visitors. On Saturday, Jan. 8 join arboretum staff for a look at plants of interest in the landscape. At this time of year bark and tree structure stand out, along with fruits and berries. The tour starts at 10 a.m. and runs for a little over an hour. Meet at the visitor center and dress for the weather. Tours are free. For more information, call 508-693-9426.

Forbes Conservation Prize For Dr. David Lowenthal

Dr. David Lowenthal, a boyhood visitor to Chilmark, was recently awarded the 2010 Forbes Prize for conspicuous service to conservation given annually by the Council of the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works. The award, presented in Istanbul, Turkey, honors Edward Waldo Forbes, emeritus director of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University.

Emphasis on Green Gives Island Business Top Honors

Nelson Mechanical Design Inc. of Vineyard Haven was recently selected 2010 Contractor of the Year in a national survey by the Penton Media Group, a publishing firm that serves 50,000 mechanical contractors across the United States. Penton publishes Contractor Magazine, Green Mechanical Contractor, Radiant Living, and Heating, Plumbing and Air Conditioning Engineering.

Alexander Baynes Graduates Top in Naval Class

Lt. Alexander B. Baynes, son of Leslie and Judy Baynes of Edgartown, recently graduated first in his class from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif. He was awarded the Navy League Award for the Highest Academic Achievement.

Lieutenant Baynes, an engineering duty officer, chose for his thesis research on the efficacy of meta-materials and transformational optics to defend against high-energy electromagnetic beams.  

New Year, New You? There Is a Class for That

More than 60 winter and spring classes will be offered through Adult and Community Education of MV (ACE MV) and the catalog is available at all the libraries and schools on the Island, as well as online.

Winter courses begin Jan. 10 at six locations: the regional high school, the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, Featherstone Center for the Arts, West Tisbury School, Kitchen Porch and MVTV.
