We want spring to be here, but the bright, sunny end of March gave way to April chills and showers. At least we can get Back Door Donuts or breakfast at Slice of Life, starting next week. Keep thinking spring!
Games Night at the Oak Bluffs school was a success. The PTO congratulates Barbara Jones for her efforts. Ms. Holenko’s fifth grade, the seventh grade Economic Stimulus Basket and Barbara Jones’ first grade arts and crafts basket earned top honors in ticket sales.

Spring is still in its subtle stages of change here on Chappaquiddick. The moss on the woods paths and in my lawn is turning a satisfying bright green, and the grass looks as if it might join in at some point. The ends of the blueberry and huckleberry bush branches look red enough to burst out into either leaves or flames, and the hazelnut catkins hang decorously from bushes all through the woods. I’ve also noticed the first tiny leaves coming out on the honeysuckle.

Who knew when I was in New York visiting Iole, Ed Colligan, salad bar czar of Cronig’s, would choose that time to retire? Ed is one of my best stringers for this column. I certainly miss seeing him when I get my lunch. The gang he trained so well is still doing a great job. Shawn says Ed stops by frequently. Some people just aren’t meant to retire.

April showers bring May flowers. That is the line for the month. I have a yard full of crocuses and they give us a lot of pleasure. I saw Pat Hathaway on the way to the corner for school guard duty and she stopped to take a look at the flowers which I’m sure gave her a lift.

April Fools’ day came and went. About two years ago, though, the sign at West Basin disappeared. If you crossed the town line early in the wee hours on Wednesday, you would have noticed it was creatively placed over the entering Aquinnah sign, pointing one in the direction of West Basin. So we have faith that perhaps one day the entering Gay Head sign will also resurface.
