You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Cantina

You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Cantina

“Y’all know me. Know how I earn a living. I’ll catch this bird for you, but it ain’t gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin’ bluegills and tommy cods.”

And what bad fish are we talking about here? Points to the salty sea captain in the back. It’s Jaws of course, also known, when referring to the actual mechanical reproduction of the mythic monster, as Bruce.

The Pilgrims survived!

For this they praised the Lord

And thanked their Indian friends

Who taught them how to live

In this different land.

Like them we pause,

From daily toil and furrowed brow relieved,

To feast and laugh and play and rest,

And tell ourselves how much we’re blessed

In this hopeful land.

Could they have known,

Long years ago, where Moses’ trek would lead:

Stiletto heels and MTV,

Conservation is Truly Plan of Least Impact

Often lost in the debate about the pros and cons of developing new sources of energy production is the critical importance of conserving our existing energy reserves by promoting conservation and altering personal consumption habits. Energy conservation — increasing the efficiency of energy use to produce more output for the same consumption — must be part of the conversation if we are to overcome the unprecedented energy challenges we face globally and locally.

Sporting a baseball cap still, the 85-year-old guy recalled the progression of his fielding positions over five decades of summer games on the Chilmark diamond.

Former Housing Fund Chief Says His Piece, Firing Salvos at Critics of Its Approach

Bob Wheeler’s voice shook with emotion as he spoke of his reasons for stepping down from the board of the Island Affordable Housing Fund.

Mr. Wheeler, on the eve of his departure from Martha’s Vineyard to live on the other side of the country, after years spent “busting my ass” to put Islanders into affordable housing, wanted to say that despite the fund’s parlous financial state, despite the mistakes that had been made, he left “with my head held high.”

Towns Speed Ahead With Solar Plans

Eight months from now, the Vineyard could finally be able to boast its first significant, working, zero-carbon energy project. And the power will come not from wind but from the sun.

By the start of July two towns, Edgartown and Tisbury, could be harvesting all their municipal energy needs from several acres of solar panels, and doing it affordably.

Offshore Wind Developers at Ready

Wind developers pressed ahead on two fronts this week, as two new players entered the fray with proposals to develop wind farms in waters west of the Vineyard and Cape Wind put the final touches on a deal to sell electricity to National Grid.

Vineyard Raises Cup in Gripping Victory

On Saturday, after two years of frustration and delay, Nantucket finally came back across the Muskeget Channel and down the placard-lined mean streets of Oak Bluffs to rekindle a rivalry that, simply by geography, is unlike any other in sports. It was worth the wait.
