Laundry Cart Makes Green Start for Betty Wolfson’s Cleaner Art

“Whose underwear is this?” asks artist Betty Wolfson with a laugh.

“Usually I ask permission to photograph and then paint someone’s laundry line, but I didn’t get the chance when I snapped this one somewhere in Vineyard Haven. Now I’m hoping the owner will recognize her silky panties and step forward.” Surely the unknown laundry-hanger will do so if she happens to see the poster painting for Let It All Hang Out, when Featherstone Center for The Arts presents works this Sunday by the North Hampton and Oak Bluffs artist.

antlion

Kings of the Insect Jungle

This lion won’t roar, but it could be considered king of the insect jungle.

Antlions are neither true ants nor are the little bugs lions. In fact, they are not yet even adults, but rather predacious insect larvae that have a big head and sharp spiny jaw. These terrorizing teenagers resemble a pill bug in a suit of armor.

Western Kingbird

Western Kingbird Anecdote

I really wowed her with my aerial flight and super sputtering call. Sometimes I get dizzy flying that zig zag pattern, but it gets me a mate every time. It was a nice nest we built, on top of a utility pole in the open country in Idaho. My spouse helped me collect weeds, twiglets and grass which we fashioned into a nest the shape of a cup. We even lined the nest with feathers and animal hair to make a soft cushion for the eggs. My spouse laid four beautiful eggs which were off white with speckles of lavender, black and brown. Almost 20 days later the eggs hatched and for the next 16 days I barely remember a thing. My mate and I were so busy feeding the young I barely got any sleep! Our youngsters finally fledged and flew the coop. Now it was our turn to relax and to catch up on our sleep and feed ourselves.
