Grand Jury Indicts Two

A Dukes County grand jury indicted two people on Monday, one on drug trafficking charges and another for statutory rape.

Mitefea Kelly, 18, was indicted on one count of trafficking cocaine in the amount of 200 grams or more.

Ms. Kelly, a New York resident, was arrested in August for allegedly coming to the Island with more than 270 grams of cocaine, part of what members of the Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force said was an operation to bring large amounts of cocaine to the Vineyard. Bail was set in her case at $200,000

Land Bank Revenues: Sept. 28

The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank reported revenues of $242,790 for the business week ending on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012. The land bank receives its funds from a two per cent fee charged on many Vineyard real estate transactions.

Flatbread Reprimanded

The Edgartown selectmen sent a warning letter to the Flatbread Pizza Company after the popular restaurant by the airport closed early for the season. Last week, selectmen authorized sending a letter of warning to Flatbread because it closed for the season in early September.

Gazette Reports Circulation

The Vineyard Gazette’s total print circulation remained flat this year, as traffic to its website continued double digit growth.

Total average circulation for the Gazette over the past 12 months was 8,903, compared with 8,823 for the same period last year. Paid circulation was 8,472 compared with 8,569 in 2011, a 1.1 per cent decline.

Shellfish Group Hatches Strong Season

The Vineyard had a bumper crop of hatchery-raised shellfish this year. The Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group, which provides shellfish to all Island towns, produced nearly double the number of quahaugs and oysters. The bay scallop crop was also good, although not as good as last year.

Split Week of Successes as Vineyarders Take to Track, Fields

In high school sports action boys’ soccer takes on Dennis-Yarmouth today at 3 p.m.

Vineyarders resume after the long weekend with a Monday golf match against Whitman-Hanson at 3 p.m. Girls’ soccer and field hockey play Coyle-Cassidy and Barnstable, respectively, on Tuesday at 3 p.m., and the cross country team hosts Coyle at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Field hockey takes on West Bridgewater on Thursday, while girls’ soccer plays Bishop Stang and the co-ed golf team takes on Falmouth.

Plenty of Fish in Sea as Derby Nears End

This holiday weekend is the last full weekend for those competing in the 67th annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. Anglers will see the sunsets and note the sunrises, and quite a few will fish through the full three-day weekend, hoping to catch the largest striped bass, bluefish, bonito and false albacore.

Nearly 2,800 fishermen are registered in the contest. Of those, 300 are junior anglers.

Oak Bluffs Town Column: Oct. 5

From 1835 to 1879, Edgartown’s Farm Neck/Eastville community grew dramatically, due to the Camp Meeting Association replacing family tents with permanent wooden homes. Almost simultaneously, the Oak Bluffs Land and Wharf Company built the new seaside resort now frequently called Cottage City, which is believed to be one of the first communities built all at one time.

The leaves are starting to turn. The fresh apples are in the produce department and there are pumpkins at the nurseries. The mums and cabbages are now in flower pots. There is a faint smell of wood burning in the air and you can sleep with the blankets up to your chin. Fall is here. Ain’t it grand?
