Go Purple! Whether on the field with the cheering crowds and uniformed players, or in the high grass with late blooming flowers, you are likely to find potent purple power this time of year. Last week, both the MV team, having won the past few games, and the flowering foliage in the field were standing purple, proud and well-watered after all the rain.

Bird watchers or birders the world over have always wanted to look for and at birds in Colombia. Why, because the country has the most diverse habitats, for its size, than any other South American country.

The marriage of Erin Anne Broadhurst, daughter of Cynde Hargrave and Robert Broadhurst, to Sean Donlin Ready, son of John Ready and Kim Ready, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 13 in Edgartown. Sean and Erin became engaged to be married on the Island in April 2011, as they prepared to open Edgartown Meat & Fish Market. Sarah DeWitt Jones and Scott Robert Hill are pleased to announce their engagement. Ms. Jones and Mr. Hill, both of Melrose, will be married Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in West Tisbury.

Mr. Hill is the son of Robert Frank Hill and Carolyn Ann Hill of Morro Bay, Calif. Ms. Jones is the daughter of Douglas Stuart Jones of Manchester, Conn., and Rebecca Boggs Groene of Winfield, Kans. She is the granddaughter of Ralph and Alvida Jones of West Tisbury, and the great-granddaughter of the late Dionis Riggs of West Tisbury.

Robin and Adam Rose of Shrewsbury announce the birth of a son, Ethan Joseph Rose, born on Sept. 11, 2012 at the St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester. Ethan weighed 9 pounds, 10 ounces at birth. Ethan is welcomed by sister Lyla, grandparents Stephen and Kathleen Rose of Edgartown and Gerald and Jean Galena of Worcester.

David Nash of Edgartown was in the process of explaining how artificial fly lures are made when a neighboring fisherman’s rod bowed toward the water. A distinct whirring sound zipped through the air and the angler’s line raced out into Edgartown Harbor.

Mr. Nash looked up.

“That’s the sound of an albie.”
