On-Island With Ryan Montbleau

Offstage, while having dinner at Smoke ‘n Bones in Oak Bluffs, singer/songwriter Ryan Montbleau is quiet and unassuming, just another approachable friendly guy eating ribs.

But onstage at the Pit Stop, later that same evening, Mr. Montbleau transforms into something much larger, captivating the audience with his spirited singing and playing.

Chilmark Coffee Brews Bold, Bright Future

Todd Christy could do better. After two attempts at making the perfect shot of espresso, he still wasn’t satisfied.

All About Eclecticism

Domingo Pagan, artist and photographer, opens his studio to the public in a show called Eclecticism: The Image Is The Message on June 30 from 2 to 6 p.m.

His traditional and digital media, a truly eclectic collection of work, include vibrant photographic landscapes and sensitive female portraits. His oil paintings are detailed reproductions of well-known impressionist works, and his watercolors are mysterious portraits, including some that employ a technique similar to inverted spectrum.

Ben Taylor’s Latest Brings It Back Home

When Ben Taylor was visiting friends in Boulder Colo., he spent a lot of time in the bathroom. He was trying to write a song and needed to find some space to think.

“It was just so peaceful in there,” he said.

The song he wrote during that visit is called Worlds Are Made of Paper, a folk song characterized by a melodious harmony, which appears on his new CD, Listening, to be released on August 14.

Listening is Mr. Taylor’s first album in four years.

Island Theatre Workshop Opens With Mistaken Identity Tale

The story is admittedly odd, but the musical I Sent a Letter to My Love (lyrics and music by Melissa Manchester and Jeffrey Sweet) now running at the Katharine Cornell Theatre, has been stylishly packaged by Island Theatre Workshop. The storyline was adapted from a novel of the same name by Bernice Rubens, so perhaps the oddness may be laid at the feet of the author.

Monday Night, Every Night, Special for the Playhouse

Cardboard pieces, broken sticks, a busted wicker chair, a stepladder, an empty pack of cigarettes and a mop bucket lay in a pile on the floor of the Hebrew Center last Monday night.

MJ Bruder Munafo, the executive artistic director of the Vineyard Playhouse, took the stage.

“We want to thank the Hebrew Center for this wonderful space,” she said, looking down at the debris. “Which we’ve immediately trashed.”
